Eligibility Guide

Know what lenders look for.

A practical guide to common credit, income, employment, business and documentation factors that can influence loan eligibility in India.

Credit history Repayment capacity Income & documents
Baseline factors

Three things shape most credit decisions.

These are common assessment areas, not universal cut-offs. Each lender applies its own underwriting policy to the applicant and product.

01

Credit Health

Credit score, repayment history, active accounts and recent defaults can influence eligibility and pricing. A score around 700 or above may be preferred by some lenders, but there is no single universal cut-off.

02

Repayment Capacity

Lenders assess income against existing obligations to understand repayment capacity. FOIR or similar affordability measures can form part of the assessment; acceptable levels vary by lender and product.

03

KYC & Legal Standing

Applicants generally need valid KYC and supporting records. Citizenship, residence, entity status and other legal requirements depend on the product and institution.

Meeting a broad benchmark does not guarantee approval. The final decision can depend on the lender, product, documentation, credit policy and information available at the time of application.

Product-specific criteria

The details change with the facility.

The original Finyra guide groups the criteria into business facilities, home finance and personal capital. Those categories are retained below.

Corporate & Business Facilities

Financial profile
  • 01

Revenue, profitability and balance-sheet strength can be relevant to business-credit assessment.

  • 02

Positive net worth and manageable leverage are generally helpful when a lender evaluates business debt capacity.

  • 03

Audited financial statements or other financial records may be required depending on the facility.

Operational profile
  • 01

Business vintage and continuity in the current sector may influence the lender's assessment.

  • 02

GST, Udyam/MSME and other registrations can form part of business documentation where applicable.

  • 03

Banking history, tax filings and existing facilities may also be reviewed.

Home Financing

Salaried applicants
  • 01

Age, income, employment continuity and credit profile are commonly assessed.

  • 02

Some lender programmes may use minimum-income, age-at-maturity or employment-tenure thresholds.

  • 03

Property eligibility, documentation and repayment capacity are also central to a mortgage assessment.

Self-employed applicants
  • 01

Business vintage, income stability and tax filings may be important inputs.

  • 02

Lenders may review multiple years of ITRs, financial statements and banking records.

  • 03

Age-at-maturity and other product-level thresholds vary across institutions.

Personal Capital & Liquidity

Typical profile considerations
  • 01

Employment type and employer category can influence the personal-loan products available.

  • 02

Monthly income, existing obligations and credit history are commonly used to assess affordability.

  • 03

Work experience, current-employer tenure and bank-credit history can form part of lender-specific criteria.

Documentation

Keep the standard KYC basics ready.

Requirements can differ by lender and product, but applicants are commonly asked for identity/address proof and income or banking records relevant to the application.

01 PAN Identity / tax record
02 Aadhaar / KYC Identity & address
03 Bank Statements Recent account history
04 Income Proof ITR / salary / financials

Eligibility is not a single number.

Credit score, FOIR, turnover, age, employment tenure and income benchmarks shown on this page are useful reference points—not promises of approval. Lender policy, applicant circumstances, documentation and the chosen product determine the final outcome.
